The Mistley Thorn...

The Mistley Thorn is a pub with a bit of a history... built in 1723 the current pub stands on the site where the notorious Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins tried and condemned to death dozens of local women during the English Civil War.

Things are a little different now! The Mistley Thorn is now a gorgeous boutique hotel and pub run by an American.

Only a short drive from London, The Mistley Thorn provides an idea short break from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

There are only five rooms, all tastefully decorated, some with views down the Stour Estuary. All rooms have en-suite facilities with roomy double-ended baths and showers.

The food at the Mistley Thorn is fantastic, I've stayed their three times and loved both the food and service. My favorite is the scallop and chorizo starter, but the mains are great, and especially the seafood specials. Its the place where I fell in love with samphire (an edible plant found on the coast).

The only downside is the size of the deserts, they are wonderful but huge!

The full english breakfast is also excellent.
