Kota Kinabalu...

Mount Kinabalu stands at 4,095 metres (13,435 ft) above sea level and despite never climbed anything other than a steep hill we decided to give it a go.

Kota Kinabalu

We started in the morning, loaded with peanuts, water and loads of Haribo (for energy!) picked up our guide and set off for Laban Rata.

Laban Rata Hut is situated at around 3,300 metres, and is the stop over for those aiming for the peak. The accommodation is simple but I have never enjoyed a shower, fried rice and cold coke so much in my life!

We set off for the peak at 2.30am, aiming to hit the top for sunrise.

The last part of the climb was cold, very dark, at times felt very dangerous, but was well worth it. Truly the best thing I have ever done, and a great feeling of achievement.

The way down from Kota Kinabalu

Little did I know the trek down was actually more painful than the way up... hence the reason we got a taxi to take us direct to the Shangri-La resort for a steam room, room service and chance to watch the British Lions tour!
